Alderney is the northernmost of the inhabited Channel Islands. The country has the perfect infrastructure to give small to medium sized businesses what they need, given the substantial investment in the islands broadband connectivity in the last years, there is a natural fit with eCommerce companies, geographically portable businesses and other online employment ventures. At present, the most common of eCommerce businesses found on Alderney are those associated with eGaming, many of which are back-office operations. However, there are a number of other entrepreneurial businesses operating on the island.

Alderney issues two categories of eGambling licence:

A Category 1 Licence or Associate Certificate authorises the organisation and preparation of gambling operations, namely the registration and verification of players, the contractual relationship with them, and the management of player funds. This type of license is primarily sought by operators.

A Category 2 Licence or Associate Certificate authorises the effecting of the gambling transaction including operational management of a gambling platform located within an approved hosting centre. This type of license is primarily sought by software providers. 

Depending on the proposed operations, a company may apply for one or both types of licence.
